Discusses the remedies available to families who have sought to adopt a child but the child's difficulties mean the family is more burdened than they had anticipated. The English case of A v Essex County Council [2003] 1 FLR 615 is analysed, and compared with the earlier Scottish case of M and M v Glasgow Corporation 1976 SLT (Sh Ct) 45.
