This chapter reviews the controversial Lockerbie trial that convicted Libyan national Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi for the murder of 270 passengers of Pan Am flight 103 on 21 December 1988. As alleged in the trial, Megrahi was linked to the purchase of the improvised explosive device which was used to destroy Pan Am 103. Megrahi received the mandatory sentence for murder under Scots law, life imprisonment, with a recommended minimum of 20 years before being considered for release. On 24 November 2003, that recommended period was replaced with a mandatory 27 years before consideration for release as the ‘punishment part’ of his sentence, as required by human rights legislation.
