The uncertainty concerning Turkey’s democratic future depends not only on authoritarian tendencies of majoritarian rule and the momentous consequences of the failed coup but also on the presence and intensification of a longstanding necropolitical undercurrent of Turkey’s political constitution. This chapter offers the theoretical groundwork of the volume, mapping the problematic of necropolitics that informs the contributions in the book. It presents Turkey as a political laboratory in which necropolitics must be understood in the plural and where various modalities of necropolitics are in the making.
