This chapter introduces the phenomenon of informational filmmaking in Denmark, giving an overview of the purpose, scope and reach of the body of films in question. It outlines the approach to the case studies, explaining that the book is not a history of the state-sponsored film in Denmark, but a series of case studies examining the commissioning, production, distribution, exhibition and reception of a representative sample of the films made under the auspices of Dansk Kulturfilm. A chapter-by-chapter outline of the book is also provided.
