“Othering” Cleopatra and Egypt in Rome

(p.193) 15 The Rattle of the Sistrum
Rome Season Two

John J. Johnston

Edinburgh University Press

The chapter, “The Rattle of the Sistrum: ‘Othering’ Cleopatra and Egypt in Rome,” by John J. Johnston, appraises the set and costume design of Cleopatra’s court in Alexandria and its exotic denizens in the second season of the series Rome. This chapter exposes the set and costume designers’ clear intentions to heighten the sense of alien-ness and decadence in their depiction of Cleopatra’s court as epitomizing the queen herself. The chapter demonstrates that this intention stands in contradiction to any historical authenticity of Hellenistic Egypt.
