The chapter, “Rome, Shakespeare, and the Dynamics of the Cleopatra Reception,” by Gregory N. Daugherty, explores the bold, innovative portrayal of the Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, and her love affair with Mark Antony, in the second season of the series Rome. This chapter describes the episodes and scenes highlighting Cleopatra and her interactions with Antony, and explores the scenes’ visual and narrative resonances to Plutarch, Shakespeare, and numerous other cinematic versions. The chapter also shows how these resonances allow a greater dramatic focus on the tragic couple.
