This chapter focuses on figures of marginality and censorship in the translations, looking at the ideological and poetic resonance of translators’ choices which can be traced in the treatment of partly repressed desire, gendered language and point of view. It situates their translation praxis within modernist experiments with dialogic or contrapuntal voice, contrasting it with the narrative smoothness and control associated with nineteenth-century realism. It offers a detailed study of Woolf and Koteliansky’s translation of the censored chapters of Dostoevsky’s The Devils. Moving on to the other co-translations, it studies representations of the child, the prostitute and seductresses, before evoking more deeply embedded networks of homo-erotic desire. The chapter concludes with a study of Mansfield and Koteliansky’s translation of an unpublished prose-poem by Tolstoy.
