This report tells of Penelope Jackson’s purchase of the Nigel Brown portrait of Mansfield, which adorns the cover of this volume. The painting belongs to Brown’s Names series, which celebrates Mansfield along with other famous New Zealanders, and this essay explains the iconographic and pictorial clues to the portrait, taken from Mansfield early years in Wellington, the photograph from which Brown worked and the portrait’s inscription of Matthew 3.3 (found in a letter by Mansfield).

Keywords:   Nigel Brown, portrait, Names series, Mansfield, Wellington, Matthew 3:3
