The American Left

Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones

Edinburgh University Press

Socialists were prominently involved in the “Harlem Renaissance”, a cultural flowering that re-defined America to be inclusive of black citizens. The Communist Party took the lead in fighting racism. In the interwar years, the left defined not only America, but also the nation’s foe, fascism. Italian Americans formed the Anti-Fascist Alliance of North America in 1923. The “Lincoln Brigade” fought against Franco in the Spanish civil war. The chapter discusses Alain Locke, Marcus Garvey, James Weldon Johnson, Ernest Hemingway, Harry Bridges, Upton Sinclair, James W. Ford, Paul Robeson, the Scottsboro case, and the invasion of Ethiopia.

Keywords:   Alain Locke, Communist Party, fascism, Harlem Renaissance, Lincoln Brigade, Scottsboro, Upton Sinclair
