Using a collection of fiction films produced during the early 1960s by Swedish amateur filmmaker Mauno Eksell as its primary source material, this chapter examines the organisational history, typical styles, and characteristic themes of amateur fiction filmmaking in Sweden, towards the end of the cine period. The more specific interest lies in the relationship between these works and the larger-scale narratives of Swedish national development, with which they frequently engage. A key aim of the chapter is to show how this individual’s story-telling ‘from below’ resulted in fictions that widen our perspectives on the period within which they were produced. The hypothesis guiding the investigation is that amateur fictions such as Eksell’s should be conceived of as important historical source material, and should be analysed as revealing signs of the time, saying just as much about 1960s Sweden as they do about the period’s professional Swedish fictions. Given the dynamic international film culture of these years in which Sweden played such a prominent role, the chapter closes with consideration of an attendant ‘internationalisation of amateurism’ during the era, facilitating links across the sector between national specificities, international influences, and local amateur agendas.
