It focuses on the eroticisation of the male body in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Teorema (1968), The Decameron (1971), The Canterbury Tales (1972) and Arabian Nights (1974). The chapter examines the films’ erotic imagery, and in particular the display of the naked male body, in relation to Pasolini’s search for an oppositional cinematic language (the so-called ‘cinema of poetry’). The chapter theorises the spectatorial experience of the encounter with male nudity and sexual explicitness in Pasolini’s films by providing a detailed account of the conditions under which the male crotch is screened.
