Last Words: Count Robert of Paris, Reliquiae Trotcosienses and Castle Dangerous
This chapter discusses Scott's final works, namely Count Robert of Paris, Reliquiae Trotcosienses and Castle Dangerous. These novels have been perceived as the most problematic, and the discussion looks at the difficulties Scott experienced while writing these texts. It shows that recent critical attention has suggested that these works are worth revisiting, and discusses the issues on art, language and communicating the past that are presented. It then studies each of the novels in detail, in order to understand fully the narrative spaces found within them.
