While some Muslim saints were born into prominent family lineages and attracted historical attention from their earliest years, Sa'bān-i Velī was not among these groups and only rose to prominence during the later period of his life. Therefore, the picture of his early life and his eventual incorporation into the Halveti order is among the most ill-documented parts of his life. On the other hand, these events are not without value for the historian if they are placed within the political, religious and social context of the early tenth/sixteenth-century Asia Minor under a recently ascendant Ottoman state. This chapter focuses on Sa'bān-i Velī's early life and conversion to Sufism. The first section discusses the Islamic and Sufi culture before the arrival of Sa'bān-i Velī. The second section provides a brief account of the early life of Sa'bān-i Velī and his induction into the Halveti order. All of the narratives of the early life of Sa'bān-i Velī were based on the hagiography of Ömer El-Fu'ādī.
