The Minaret

Jonathan M. Bloom

Edinburgh University Press

This chapter explores the reaction to the minaret in the Maghrib, or western Islamic lands, especially North Africa, in the ninth century. It shows that the tower was accepted or rejected, and its meaning modified in the various provinces of the Islamic empire, depending on not only the relationship between a particular region and the central authority but also the religious affiliations of the people there.

Keywords:   Abbasid, Islam, Muslims, tower
