This chapter discusses the history of the minaret in lands not conquered by the Mongols or affected by their conquests, ranging from the Levantine coast to Arabia, Egypt, and North Africa. It shows that the minaret followed a different course, with the single tower traditions in Syria and Egypt as well as those of the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa developing in their own ways, although very occasionally Iranian forms were adopted.
