This chapter introduces Oledai in much greater detail, and discusses some of the themes and ideas that are used to guide later chapters. A vocabulary of seniority, prosperity and propriety is put forward to help define some of the more significant material and ideological concerns of those living in the village. This vocabulary captures something of the relatedness of different developments at the local level, and at the same time presents the author's own view on how to think about institutional change, combining historical, structural and personal explanations.

Keywords:   Ugandan village, vocabulary, seniority, prosperity, propriety
