Wuxia Between Nationalism and Transnationalism

Wuxia Between Nationalism and Transnationalism

(p.172) 7. Wuxia Between Nationalism and Transnationalism
Chinese Martial Arts Cinema

This last chapter discusses the present development of wuxia as the most popular genre in the Chinese-speaking cinemas. The global success of Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) has elevated the genre into the consciousness of non-Chinese audiences. Mostly shot in China, the film has also moved the genre back to its original birthplace. Today, the genre is firmly entrenched as a staple in the mainland Chinese cinema, as signified by the international successes of Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002) and House of Flying Daggers (2004). How Chinese filmmakers manage the genre’s nationalistic and transnationalistic impulses is the final topic of analysis.
