This chapter presents a particular insight into and understanding of the subject matter at hand: family Christmases in a middle-class suburban home near Chicago, Illinois, during the years 1958–68. Its theme involves a consideration of how the ideologies and customs of Christmas both mask and make painfully evident deep disagreements and family problems, not least during the lead-up to and following Christmas Day itself. In addition, a few links between ideas of residence, communication, and consumption in the construction of identity is given. The author's mother's endless Christmas was about endlessly trying to fulfill her wish that their home would become an ‘ideal’ place — free of conflict, free of surprises, free of influences from the troubling world outside. As for him, he had his media, electronic devices, and electric guitar.
