Nietzsche's Perspectival Theory of Knowledge

Nietzsche's Perspectival Theory of Knowledge

(p.52) (p.53) Chapter 2 Nietzsche's Perspectival Theory of Knowledge
Nietzsche on Epistemology and Metaphysics

Tsarina Doyle

Edinburgh University Press

This chapter investigates how we can have objective knowledge of mind-independent reality without violating the anthropocentric conditions of our knowledge. It discusses Friedrich Nietzsche's specific arguments in favour of the objectivity of human knowledge and examines his perspectivism as a rejection of metaphysical realism. It analyses Nietzsche's argument that our truths are always justified from within a particular point of view and that once the idea of extra-perspectival truth has been shown to be unintelligible there is no longer any reason to consider our perspectival truths as anything but objective.

Keywords:   objective knowledge, mind-independent reality, Friedrich Nietzsche, perspectivism, metaphysical realism, truths
