The Myth of the Jacobite Clans

This chapter demonstrates the nature and extent of some of the sources of Jacobite weaponry. It asks what weapons the army as a whole had at its disposal. It notes that arms captures and surrenders provided the best evidence. It reports that on Culloden battlefield itself and the days afterward, 2,320 muskets and 190 broadswords were recovered, together with thirty-seven barrels of powder and twenty-two ammunition carts; one blunderbuss alone was taken with eighteen balls in it. It further reports that accounts of the Jacobite battle line suggested that the second line was occupied by those ‘who have only guns’, indicating the carrying of swords in the front line, but also the possession of guns by that line too.
