Sample Texts
This chapter contains several written samples of Indian English from the earliest times to modern times. A wide range of contexts and domains of writing are presented in separate sections, each section being organised chronologically. Samples of both standard and non-standard Indian English are presented with brief comments. Samples are drawn from literature, official documents, letters, newspaper articles and reports, letters to the editor, advertisements, and other miscellaneous items such as recipes. In addition, some lectures are included. A couple of transcripts from recordings accompanying the volume also find a place in the chapter. The samples demonstrate the existence of standard and non-standard forms and the different styles of writing in Indian English depending on the context, and also that across time, such a range has existed.
