This chapter offers an overview of ‘fan vids’, which are ‘non-professional’ forms of music videos that often appropriate existing, previously separate visual and sonic elements to create a fresh cultural object. The rate of production of fan videos has increased exponentially in recent years. The interrelation between music video and film and television is very firmly based in popular culture. The use of intertextual references to films and television programmes seems to traverse song styles and musical genres. In the creation of fan vids, the music is chosen before the visuals and dictates which visual segments are used at which point. Fan videos are a creative expression of fandom and a means of sustaining fan communities by contributing new content. It is also the outcome of their creators' cumulative media experience.
