New research was eager to write the history of the Pictish nation – important players in Dark Age Europe – and here the University of York saw its opportunity. This chapter outlines the preliminary evaluation of the site and the design of the archaeological campaign – a state of the art example of archaeological method. Told as a first-person creative experience.
