This chapter focuses on the work and career of film-maker Pawel Pawlikowski, who, through his creative and ambiguous relationship to both cinema and television, serves as a case study for illustrating the fluidity and connectivity central to the relationship between the two mediums in Europe over the past few decades. It contrasts the case of Pawlikowski, which highlights the authorship aspect of audio-visual production, with examples of more genre-driven dynamics evident in particular in historical costume drama. This genre, when considered from the perspective of television, is a truly transnational one, whose examples can be found centrally placed in the schedules of public broadcasters across Europe. The reason for drawing a distinction between these two approaches to audio-visual production, authorship, and genre is that the first one demonstrates an osmotic interface between the two mediums, whilst the latter points to a much more tense hybridisation.
