This chapter provides evidence of linguistic awareness as an essential component of multilingual proficiency. It begins with a review of some international studies on the multilingual lexicon, which is presented as an introduction to the Tyrol study on the use of English as a third language. After providing the theoretical and methodological background of the study, the three main research questions are the subjects of detailed focus. Finally, the findings of the study and some implications for future studies are presented.
