Coin Types and Identity: Greek cities in Sicily
Coin Types and Identity: Greek cities in Sicily
The types of coins in Sicily during the Greek period have contributed much to the areas of investigation as the religion and cults of the Greek cities, or the history and development of Greek art on the island: the types of Sicilian coins are well known for the very high level of the artistic quality they frequently achieved. They are also unique in the Greek world for the richness and variety of their depictions of elements of the natural world. The word ‘unique’ introduces at the outset a contrast with the coins of the Aegean world colonists left behind: the Siceliotes developed their own approaches to the business of creating coin types. This chapter explores the ways in which the many different peoples who lived together on the island interacted, in questions of ethnicity, of identity, and how these concepts might have been expressed in the material record.
