This chapter focuses on the legacy and historical importance of Ferdinand de Saussure's ideas about linguistics. It discusses English linguist J.R. Firth's classification of all linguists of his generation into Saussureans, anti-Saussureans, post-Saussureans and non-Saussureans, which confirms a perception of Saussure's pivotal position in the history of modern linguistics. The chapter explains that Saussure's ideas had greater influence outside linguistics and investigates how his teaching became a catalyst for great intellectual movements.
