Jacques Derrida's work, the ‘event’ of his oeuvre, perhaps calls for a new ghost tense. This chapter tries to account the fact that a ghostly response is always possible. His interest when reading a text is in trying to respond to a ghostly ‘come’. The connotations of the ‘come’ and ‘coming’ in his writings consistently include the sexual. He is concerned to countersign, to produce writing events of his own. At one moment in the book Derrida seeks to describe, the double and radically fictive or poematic figure of a ‘single countersigned signature’: it would be an ‘event [that is] idiomatic every single time’, ‘the momentary singularity of a certain coitus of signatures’.
