This chapter combines all of Hardy's work that was written at different points from 1881 to 1900. The discussion centres on a group of late stories, and occasionally references the earlier work. This includes ‘A Tryst at an Ancient Earthwork’, which helps in the discussion of themes of historical retrieval and the ethos of keeping faith with the past. Other stories examined in the chapter include ‘The Duke's Reappearance’, ‘A Changed Man’, and ‘Enter a Dragoon’.

Keywords:   late stories, historical retrieval, faith, ethos, Duke's Reappearance, Changed Man, Enter a Dragoon, Ancient Earthwork
