Christmas brings with it a sense of ‘recognition’ that is largely dependent upon a sedimented evocation of its history, albeit tempered by the social structure and customs of the country. The topics explored in this book relate to major issues concerning cultural activity, its relationship to a set of basic values, social relationships, and the way in which ideological discourses are used and mobilised, not least in times of conflict and war. These are explored through a case study approach, with invited contributions from leading researchers within the fields of popular culture, communications, sociology, politics, and music. It investigates the ways in which the production of meaning is mediated by the social and cultural practices surrounding Christmas. An overview of the chapters included in this book is given.
