The quiz/ game show has often been perceived to occupy a low place in the cultural hierarchy. The Introduction examines such perceptions, and considers why they might exist, drawing on comments from TV producers, academics and cultural commentators. The Introduction goes on to consider how the apparent dominance of American television in the genre has effected both the perceived cultural value of the quiz show, and quiz show scholarship, before introducing the aims of the book and the chapter summaries.
