This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to fill a substantial gap in the literature and to encourage further research in Scottish economic history. An evaluation of the historical antecedents of the Scottish economy is timely, given the restoration of a Scottish parliament in 1999 and opportunities associated with devolution. The factors in Scottish economic development are discussed and an overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
